Common Transmission Issues

Feeling a jerking feeling as you drive your car can be unsettling – and dangerous – so come on over as you drive through Little Chute. Some of the most common issues we see are:

  1. Delayed or Rough Shifting: Low or dirty transmission fluid, a worn clutch (in manual transmissions), or faulty transmission solenoids. You can find that it is really unpleasant to drive if you start having these issues.
  2. Slipping Gears: Worn-out clutch (manual transmissions), low or contaminated transmission fluid, or internal damage like worn gears or bands in the transmission. Your vehicle won’t feel as smooth as you drive.
  3. Grinding or Shaking Noises: This could be caused by worn-out gears, low fluid levels, or problems with the bearings, clutch, or torque converter.
  4. Check Engine Light or Transmission Warning Light: Transmission problems can trigger the vehicle’s on-board diagnostic system to illuminate the check engine light. This could be due to issues like low fluid, faulty sensors, or mechanical failure.
  5. Fluid Leaks: A leak in the transmission pan, seals, gaskets, or cooler lines. Leaking transmission fluid reduces the fluid levels and can cause overheating, resulting in transmission damage. If you notice leaks after you’ve been parked, it’s a good idea to check fluid levels and get into a shop to see where the leak is coming from.
  6. Burning Smell: This can be caused by a problem with the transmission not engaging properly or slipping, faulty torque converter, or low transmission fluid. You never want your vehicle to smell like it’s on fire or you are just coming from a campground!

Common FAQs On Most Common Transmission Issues

What are the signs of transmission problems?

Common signs include slipping gears, rough shifting, strange noises (grinding or whining), or the car hesitating or stalling when accelerating. When you start noticing these things, you want to get in to see a mechanic before the problem gets so big that it starts costing you much more than you expected!

Most manufacturers recommend servicing your transmission every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, which includes fluid changes and inspections. Always refer to your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.

Transmission slipping can be caused by low transmission fluid, worn-out components, or a malfunctioning solenoid. It’s crucial to address slipping quickly, as it can cause significant damage over time.

Whining or grinding noises during gear shifts can indicate worn gears, low transmission fluid, or problems with the clutch in manual transmissions. Prompt diagnosis and repair can help avoid further damage.

Transmission fluid should be bright red or pink. If it’s brown or smells burnt, it could indicate that the fluid is old or contaminated, and the transmission may be overheating. Fluid replacement and inspection are necessary to prevent damage.

It’s not recommended. Driving with a failing transmission can lead to further damage and leave you stranded. If you notice signs of trouble, it’s best to get your car inspected as soon as possible.
